Today we are headed toward Arco, Idaho, which is the town powered by nuclear energy. The employees at Knob Hill Inn went the extra mile for us. They called the county police and received permission for us to pull over in a military area. Diane took the first leg and we were supposed to meet at a brewery in Hailey, but alas, she blew passed it and I had to drink the stout myself.

We continued down 75 then turned east on 20 to head to the Craters of the Moon. Being from Mammoth, we’re used to volcanic topography but this was cool. Great lava flows and tubes. We went for a 1.8 mile hike during which I ventured into one of the volcanic caves. Another check off the list!

Great roads with not to much traffic. Once in Arco, we just hung out in the beautiful Arco Motel parking lot in our chairs and watched the Arco sunset and ate sandwiches. I struck up a conversation with the guy in the room next to us while he was smoking a cigar. Turned out to be Dick Butkus. Diane joined and we had a great conversation from the shootings in Santa Monica, physical ailments, life on a bicycle and that we were going to visit Fargo,ND on our trip. Apparently he and his wife have watched Fargo over 50 times.
