Day 15 - Baker City, Oregon to New Meadows, Idaho

6/9/13 - Hells Canyon - Cool Ride, Long Day

We’re leaving Oregon today and heading into Idaho!

We chose a unusual path that would take us through Hells Canyon on route 86, then 71 to 95 north towards McCall, ID. Because we rode nearly 160 miles with several climbs, we came up short and stayed in “The Heart Land”, New Meadows, ID. We got there as the only restaurant in town was just closing. All they had was enough food to make a pulled pork and a brisket sandwich. Exactly. No salad, no anything, just that.

Oh, I almost forgot the real reason we didn’t make it to McCall. My rear derailleur cable snapped about 50 miles before we finished the ride. I could only go flat or downhill. Diane was a stud that day as she rode nearly 90 miles and did most of the climbs. No stealing descents today! Oh, that long mileage has its benefits. Do a little dance… (DNoFlo, you know the rest.)

  • The Geiser Grand Hotel. Large rooms with high ceilings…and lots of crystal chandeliers.
  • Taking off from Bakers City to New Meadows.
  • A monument to the Oregon Trail. Rather phallic
  • Hwy 86 going to the farmlands of Richland and to the heartland of New Meadows
  • The whole reason to head this way was to see Hells Canyon
  • Feelin’ Good!
  • The Motel we were going to book in Brownlee. Dodged that bullet!
  • The fertile valley of Richmond
  • Going into Hells Canyon
  • We’ve crossed over to our third state. And still in the pretty ones.
  • Following the Snake River now
  • Bob going through the Brownlee Dam on the Snake River
  • Need we say more?
  • A well deserved beer at the Inn’s bar. Our first trip to a bar in our robes.
